Fred Ferrari, a Southern California model railroader who works as a conductor on the Union Pacific, models D&RGW, Penn Central and Boston & Maine. He has modified an un-numbered factory painted Atlas Conrail GP40 purchased second-hand by the Rio Grande in 1984. (Sorry Conrail modelers). The model was detailed with the new AT-304 air reservoir detail set and DP-305 fuel tank drain and vent pipes as well as other DW parts. See bottom of page for a list of detail parts that were added to improve the look of this pre-painted model.
The vertical plastic piece above the fuel tank was cut off on both sides. This is necessary so that the new air tanks from the AT-304 can be installed. To fully use the air tank details the back side under the walkway needs to be opened up. File the top surface of the fuel tank smooth where the vertical plastic piece was removed. The back side of the air tanks were filed slightly flat enabling the air tank to be inset and even with the edge of the walkway. The fuel tank was later reattached to the chassis with double-backed sticky tape.
The three photos above and the two below show piping detail from the air tanks to the filters.
